Zyban (bupropion) is one of the newest drugs on the market that can help smokers in their battle to give up smoking. It is not a nicotine replacement therapy product, as it does not contain nicotine. Therefore, it does not replace the nicotine that is obtained from smoking a cigarette with nicotine that is administered in a different way, as with products such as the nicotine patch or gum.
As with any medication side effects may occur. The most common side effects reported with use of Zyban are sleeping disorders, dry mouth and headaches. The side effects are usually mild and disappear after a few weeks with continuous use.
Common side effects also include anxiety, loss of appetite, agitation, dizziness, excessive sweating such as night sweats, increased risk of seizure, aggressiveness, and both initial and terminal insomnia. Activation of mania and psychosis have both been encountered. Some patients may also require less than the normal dosing which usually starts at around 150 mg for the first few weeks and is then switched to the normal 300 mg dosage; these patients may be kept on the 150 mg regimen.
