The macrolide antibiotic, Zithromax is useful for treating certain types of bacterial infections. Zithromax however, does not work for cold, flu or other viral infections. Zithromax can also be used for other purposes, as well.
Checklists
It is wise that you inform your doctor if you suffer from one or more of the following conditions:
- Kidney dysfunction
- Liver dysfunction
- Irregular heartbeat or heart disease
- Allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, other macrolide antibiotics, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- Pregnant or planning for pregnancy
- Breast-feeding
Drug Administration
Zithromax comes in the form of tablets that is taken orally, with or without food once daily for 1 to 5 days. Zithromax also has to be taken in the same time every day. Zithromax has to be taken exactly as directed by the doctor and you cannot alter the dosage without consulting the doctor. Zithromax is taken along with a full glass of water and the drug course has to be completed in full course even if you feel better after a few doses. Stopping Zithromax dose too soon might develop azithromycin resistant strains.
Drug Overdose
In case of drug overdose contact your nearest emergency care center.
Missed Dose
In case if you happen to miss a dose, do not have both the doses together. If the dosage clashes, it is better to avoid the previous dose and continue with the current dose. It is also better to consult your physician in case of any doubts regarding the dosage amount.
Drug Interactions
Some of the drug interacts with Zithromax and alters the drug efficacy. Some of these drugs include:
- Lincomycin
- Zithromax
- Amiodarone
- Antacids
- Cyclosporine
- Digoxin
- Dihydroergotamine or ergotamine
- Magnesium
- Nelfinavir
- Phenytoin
- Warfarin
Precautions
After the use of Zithromax, if your symptoms do not improve, then it is wise to contact the doctor.
If you experience diarrhea, do not treat it with over the counter medicines, instead contact doctor for the real cause if diarrhea lasts for more than 2 days.
Zithromax can make you sensitive to sun rays, hence avoid moving in sunrays if you administer this drug.
Zithromax Side Effects
Some of the side effects of Zithromax include:
- Allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
- Confusion, nightmares or hallucinations
- Dark colored urine
- Trouble breathing
- Hearing impairment
- Irregular heartbeat or chest pain
- Pain or difficulty passing urine
- Redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
- White patches or sores in the mouth
- Pigmentation of the eyes or skin
Some of the mild side effects include:
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Headache
- Stomach upset
- Vomiting
- Tooth discoloration
- Vaginal irritation
Drug Storage
Zithromax is stored at temperatures between 5 to 30 degree Celsius away from direct sunlight, heat, moisture, up to 10 days. The drug should not be used after the expiry date.
