Xanax is mainly used for treating anxiety and also control panic attacks. The doctor can also prescribe Xanax for other reasons, also depending upon his or her observation.

Xanax belongs to benzodiazepine class of drugs. The drug works by acting on the chemicals of the brain cells. Xanax is generally prescribed only for a short time around 2 to 4 weeks only. Long term administration of Xanax is not recommended, unless advised by the doctor, as the drug creates drug dependence. The Xanax medication is available only upon the doctor's prescription.

Xanax is not advised for you,

• If you are allergic to one or more ingredients of the drug
• If you suffer from myasthenia muscle weakness
• If you suffer from severe lung disease
• The drug should not be used if the packaging is torn or tampered
• The drug also should not be used after the expiry date
• The drug is not recommended for children generally, unless it is advised by the doctors.

It is recommended that you tell your doctor:

• If you are suffering from food allergy, drug allergy, chemical allergy, etc.
• If you are pregnant or planning for pregnancy
• If you are breast feeding or planning to breast feed
• If you suffer from one or many medical conditions like depression, psychosis or
• Schizophrenia, suffering from fits or convulsions, liver, kidney or lung disease
• glaucoma (high pressure in the eye), myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness), etc
• If you drink alcohol on a regular basis
It is recommended telling your doctor regarding the above mentioned factors, as the doctor can plan your medication dose and medication duration based on all these factors.

Xanax interacts with:

• Sedatives
• Medicines for controlling fits
• Antipsychotics medicines that is useful for treating certain mental and emotional conditions
• Medicines for treating depression
• Muscle relaxants
• Antihistamines that are used to prevent or relieve the symptoms of allergy such as hay fever
• Pain relievers
• Anesthetics
• Cimetidine that are used to treat reflux and ulcers
• Disulfiram that are used to treat alcoholism
• Antibiotics like erythromycin
• Oral contraceptives
• HIV protease inhibitors
• Medicines used to treat HIV infection.

Xanax interacts with all these medicines and decreases the efficacy of these medicines.

Drugs like:

• Antihistamines
• Medicines for depression
• Lithium that is used to treat mood swings and some types of depression
• Atropine and similar medicines
• Anti histamines,

also reduce Xanax efficacy.

Xanax should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Xanax can be taken after or before meals as the efficacy remains unaltered. However, if Xanax is taken after meals you are less likely to suffer from mild side effects of the drug like drowsiness. The duration of Xanax should be continued as long as the doctor has directed. You should not stop medication even if you feel better in between the course. The general dose period is between 2 to 4 weeks only. Xanax is not recommended for long term use as it makes you dependent on the drug.

In case if you happen to miss a dose, do not have both the doses together. If the dosage clashes, it is better to avoid the previous dose and continue with the current dose. It is also better to consult your physician in case of any doubts regarding the dosage amount.

In case of Xanax overdose contact your nearest emergency care center and inform if the patient has taken alcohol along with the drug, as it helps the doctor to plan the de-poisoning method accordingly.

It is wise to inform the doctor or dentist about the Xanax course if they are planning for other medications for you. It is also recommended telling your doctor regarding the body response to the medication. In case if you get pregnant during the course, then it is wise to contact the doctor for continuation of the drug or any dose alteration. It is also recommended discussing with the doctor regarding any problems you face during the drug course.

You should also not drive or do any heavy demanding work when you are undergoing the drug course especially if you feel dizzy or drowsy.

Xanax is not meant for long term use. Hence discuss with your doctor if you plan to discontinue the drug or extend the drug usage period.

Xanax also should be stopped if the patient suffers from epilepsy.

Xanax is not meant to be shared with others unless a doctor prescribes the medicine for the other person.

You should also avoid drinking alcohol while you take this medicine as alcohol might make you feel dizzy or light headed.

Xanax also should be cautiously among elder persons as they are too sensitive to the side effects of the drug.

Behavioral side effects include:

Xanax is stored at temperatures between 20 to 25 degree Celsius. Storage temperature between 15 to 30 degree Celsius is also broadly accepted. The drug should be stored away from direct heat, sunlight and moisture. Keep away from pets and children. The drug should also be not kept in bathroom sinks, or window sills, as well.

Xanax should be disposed immediately after its expiry and ask your pharmacist regarding the disposal methods.

Xanax is available in the form of tablets which contains lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silica anhydrous, maize starch, docusate sodium with sodium benzoate, magnesium stearate, erythrosine CI 45430 (500 microgram and 1 mg tablet only) and indigo carmine CI 73015 (1 mg tablet only).
