Vespar (Bespar)
buspirone hydrochloride
Vespar (buspirone hydrochloride - BH) belongs to a general class of drugs called anti-anxiety agents. Vespar is indicated for the management of anxiety disorders or the short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety.
Some anxiety symptoms: motor tension; shakiness, trembling, tension, muscle aches, fatigability, inability to relax, eyelid twitch, restlessness, autonomic hyperactivity; sweating, heart pounding or racing, cold, clammy hands, dry mouth, dizziness, upset stomach.
This medicine contains the active ingredient buspirone hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called an anxiolytic. Buspirone hydrochloride has an affect on many neurotransmitters in the brain that bring about the feeling of anxiety. However, anxiety or tension associated with the stress of everyday life usually does not require treatment with an anxiolytic.
The way in which buspirone works is not fully understood. It appears to act by modifying the release of a mixture of neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are stored in nerve cells and are involved in transmitting messages between the nerve cells. Buspirone is thought to enhance the activity of the neurotransmitters dopamine and noradrenaline, and to reduce the activity of the neurotransmitters serotonin and acetylcholine in the brain. The overall effect is to relieve feelings of anxiety.
Optimum results are usually seen after three to four weeks of treatment. The recommended initial dose is 15 mg daily (5 mg 3 times a day) and should be individually adjusted, according to tolerance and response. To achieve an optimal therapeutic response, at intervals of 2 to 3 days the dosage may be increased 5 mg per day, as needed. The maximum daily dosage should not exceed 60 mg per day.
Vespar differs from other anxiolytics in that it does not possess anticonvulsant or muscle relaxant properties, does not impair psychomotor function, and does not cause sedation or physical dependence.
Buspirone hydrochloride is also used to treat anxiety caused by alcohol craving or smoking cessation, as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children.
The reported side effects were very mild, and many clinical trials have shown the superiority of Buspirone hydrochloride over other traditional stimulant-based treatments. Most common side effects are: vertigo, headaches, nervousness, agitation, nausea, insomnia.
Vespar tablets are taken by mouth the same time each day. There is no evidence that Vespar is addictive.
