Valtrex
valaciclovir
Valtrex is used for treating Herpes virus infections like genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, chicken pox, etc. The antiviral drug slows down the growth and spread of herpes virus so that the body can defend against the antigen self. Valtrex helps in lessening the symptoms of the disease but does not completely cure the ailment.
Drug Mechanism of Action
Valtrex inhibits the multiplication of the viral DNA thus inhibiting the multiplication of the virus. Valtrex is also referred to as pro drug, where the drug does not actively participate in the eradication of the disease; else, it indirectly slows down the multiplication cycle of the virus, by forming acyclovir that aids the body to fight against the infection. Valtrex has long half life than acyclovir; hence it is advisable to consume the drug few times in a day.
The treatment should be started immediately on or before the onset of symptoms like tingling, burning sensation, blisters, etc. The medicine is not effective once you take it after the symptoms have prolonged for 1 or 2 days.
Valtrex also does not prevent the spread of genital herpes, and hence the infection is contagious and can spread easily even if you are taking the medication. It is better to avoid sex in adults if you are infected by the virus. It is better to avoid the infected areas from contacting the healthy persons. It is wise to avoid touching the infected parts of your body before touching eyes, and other sensitive areas. The hands should be washed with soap if you touch the infected parts.
Drug Administration
Valtrex should be used exactly as informed by your physician. Each dose should be taken along with one full glass of water. Valtrex also can be taken with or without food. Valtrex helps in minimizing the virulence of the symptoms but does not treat viral infection like cold, flu, etc.
