Norvasc is used for treating high blood pressure or chest pain termed as angina.
Drug Action
Norvasc is called as calcium channel blocker, as the drug blocks the calcium and the drug relaxes and expands the blood vessels allowing the blood to flow more easily. Reducing the blood pressure also helps to prevent strokes, heart attacks or kidney problems.
Drug Administration
Norvasc is administered orally with or without food. Norvasc must be used regularly to reap maximum benefit from the drug and should be taken at the same time each day. Norvasc should be used exactly as indicated by the doctor. The drug course should also be completed fully even if you feel better in between the drug course. If Norvasc is stopped abruptly, then you might have to suffer from chronic heart pain. If you want to stop the drug, it has to be stopped gradually.
Norvasc Side Effects
Some of the side effects of Norvasc include:
- Dizziness
- Lightheadedness especially during the first few days of drug administration
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Stomach pain
- Drowsiness
- Muscle cramps
- Headache
- Flushing
Some of the crucial, serious side effects include:
- Swelling of the hands or feet
- Worsening chest pain
- Pigmentation of the eyes or skin
- Dark urine
Some of the symptoms of allergic reaction include:
- Rashes
- Itching
- Swelling
- Severe dizziness
- Trouble breathing.
If the side effects of Norvasc do not wane in a few days, then it is recommended that you contact the doctor immediately.
Drug Precautions
Norvasc should not be used:
- If you are allergic to one or more ingredients of the drug
- If you have a history of heart or liver diseases
- You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol
- Norvasc should be used cautiously in adults as they are very sensitive to the side effects of the drug
- Norvasc should be used cautiously only when needed during pregnancy
- Norvasc should not be used if you are breast feeding
Drug Interactions
Norvasc interacts with:
- High blood pressure medications like beta-blockers
- "Water pills" or diuretics
- Intravenous (IV) calcium
- Medications for chest pain like nitroglycerin
- Cough and cold products, diet aids as they may contain ingredients that could increase your heart rate or blood pressure.
Norvasc should not be started or stopped without the instruction of the doctor.

General Information
The drug is not meant for sharing. It is recommended that you check your blood pressure regularly when you are administering the drug. Lifestyle changes like exercise, diet, stress reduction programs, improve the drug efficacy.
Missed Dose
In case if you happen to miss a dose, do not have both the doses together. If the dosage clashes, it is better to avoid the previous dose and continue with the current dose. It is also better to consult your physician in case of any doubts regarding the dosage amount.
Drug Storage
Norvasc is stored at temperatures between 20 to 25 degree Celsius. Storage temperature between 15 to 30 degree Celsius is also broadly accepted. The drug should be stored away from direct heat, sunlight and moisture. Keep away from pets and children.
