Diovan
valsartan
Diovan belongs to angiotensin receptor blockers class of drugs. Other drugs under this class include irbesartan (Avapro), losartan (Cozaar), and candesartan (Atacand).
Drug Action
Angiotensin is formed in the blood by the action of angiotensin converting enzyme termed as ACE, which is a powerful chemical that is formed and attaches to the angiotensin receptors found in the tissues especially smooth muscle cells of the blood vessels. The attachment of angiotensin in the muscles causes the blood vessels to constrict, which leads to increase in blood pressure. The drug, Diovan, blocks these angiotensin receptors thus resulting in the dilated blood vessels and reducing the blood pressure simultaneously.
Drug Storage
Diovan is stored at 15 to 30 degree Celsius.
Drug Uses
Diovan is prescribed for treating:
- High blood pressure
- Heart failure
- Reduce death and hospitalization in patients eho have developed congestive heart failure

Foe patients suffering from congestive heart failure, 40mg of the drug is given twice daily and dose is gradually increased to 80 to 160mg gradually. 20 mg of drug is given twice daily for patients suffering from heart attacks. The dose should be increased to 160 mg maximum gradually.
Drug administration along with food decreases the drug absorption to 40% , hence the drug works best if it is taken empty stomach.
